Basic Keyword Research

The importance of doing some Keyword Research

Keyword research is required for your search engine marketing campaign as you need to find keywords and key phrases that people really search for.

You will reckon to yourself, this is what I sell so it’s obvious this is what people will search for, not always the case. Without any keyword research it really is a guessing game.

When you reckon about the time you can spend on getting those search engine positions you so desire, all the trial and error and guessing wrongly what keywords to use, it certainly pays to use keyword research tools to find the right keywords to use.

The Google Search

What people type

If you want to be found on the first page of the search engines for your furniture company website, you would want to be found for the keyword “furniture”; this would be much harder than if you were to find alternative key phrases.

Google will show you a whole list of keywords and phrases that others have typed in before, such as glass dining room, or contemporary dining room furniture if you were to type into its search the keyword furniture.

These would be much simpler to achieve than a single word and these are keywords people do type in.

Today, the search in Google for furniture came back with 162,000,000 results
dining room tables 28,900,000 results
contemporary dining room furniture 1,120,000 results
dining room furniture 8,560,000 results
You can see the difference in the results.

Local Searches
Going Local
Another solution is if you only wanted to be found in your local area, such as a local tradesman, for example, landscape design, if someone was looking online for a landscape designer, they would only want someone from their local area, so your landscape design website should be optimized for your local area.
Such as; landscape design boston

There really wouldn’t be much point in finding a carpenter or builder hundreds of miles away as no one will be willing to travel all that far for a small maintenance job.

Keyword Tools
There are so many keyword research tools out there today; some are very excellent while others are completely useless.
The best by far I believe are, Wordtracker and Keyworddiscovery, there are others too and these do cost but they are well worth it in my opinion.

You can find excellent keywords using Google adwords for example, and there is also the Yahoo adwords program.

I have added the links to Word Tracker and Keyword Discovery below as I have used both of these and they work for me, there are other keyword research tools that I have not used so if anyone has any other suggestions, please feel free to let us know so we can add them here to help everyone.

Keyword Tool provides keyword thoughts
You can try this keyword tool from Google
It’s brilliant, you just type in your website and then a few keywords and it will find other keywords and phrases you can use too.
It’s really for Google Adwords but just have a play with it as it does give some fantastic keyword thoughts.

How many keywords per page?
You really should only optimise each page with no more than two keywords, preferably, key phrases.

If your website sold wedding dresses, you would optimise your home page for something like Designer Wedding Dresses, Discount Wedding Dresses.
No point in using just Wedding Dresses be clever.
You would have links to pages called Ivory Wedding Dresses and this page would only be optimised for that phrase; Ivory Wedding Dresses and with all your other pages you would do the same.
Too many people will have their keywords in their home page and title and all other pages would have the same, you’re not going to get anywhere like that.
I usually place the key phrase in about once every 90 to 100 words but make sure you have in your first sentence.

KeywordSpy May Be the Solution That Allows You to Save More Time

Any experienced internet marketer will tell you that the most time consuming part of his job is not the creation of a product. It is not the making of content. Before he can do any of these things, he has to do something that takes up even more time: research. You can’t simply place up a website and expect to make money; you have to know quite a bit about your market and competition first. The only way to do that though, is to do a lot of research.

A lot of research is concerned with keywords: which keywords are most searched for, which are most competitive, how much it will cost to advertise with certain keywords and which key words you can still register a domain with. That’s a lot! KeywordSpy is a program that is designed to make this simpler for you. You can use any niche as an example, like the brother hl-2170w niche.

One powerful (and sneaky) trick that KeywordSpy uses is tracking the ads that your competitors are placing online. All you have to do is find ads that you want to track and assign them to KeywordSpy. The software searches the net daily and updates its listings. You can get a report, for example, on how long someone ran an ad you are tracking. The software can find out when your competitor first placed the ad. You can also find out the most recent time the ad was seen.

This information is very valuable, because it tells you how successful the ad was. You can tell how successful an ad is by how long it runs. So all you have to do is pick the most successful ads and model your own after these.

KeywordSpy also offers internet marketers the opportunity to search for any advertising text competing sites within your niche are using. This feature alone can be a huge time-saver, as you could be spending days or even weeks trying to search for the same information manually. When you have an edge on how your competitors are using the same keywords to reach success in their own campaigns, you can emulate their example. The software can also help you to make advertising campaigns that are unique to you, which can often increase response rates.

If you look at the many keyword programs on the market, you’ll find that most track only results from Google. KeywordSpy does not only track keywords in Google, but in the two other huge search engines as well, Bing and Yahoo.

Since many people use these other search engines as well, this gives you an edge over people who use tools that only watch Google. When you can look at how a site is placed in all three of these search engines, you can make a more comprehensive marketing plan. Many customers buy from site they found on Bing and Yahoo too!

Just like with any similar software packages, the creators of KeywordSpy want you to believe that it’s the best tool available to help internet marketers. While this might be right to some extent, you will still need to place in some work and analysis of your own to get it right. This doesn’t mean the software is worth nothing, though. KeywordSpy is able to save you quite a lot of time and effort. We’d highly recommend it to anyone who is developing more than one product at a time or who might be only a part time internet marketer. The sale price for this product is justified given the sheer amount of time you can save.
